Presidents Column - August 2009

George D. Honeywell

By now I am sure many of you have purchased your licenses for the upcoming season. Now, what do we do with these little things? I guess they can swim around in the big old holders, or we can purchase the new smaller ones to tote them around. Sounds like the stimulus plan is working, buy one item and you then need to buy another.

And what about those doe applications - I almost had to put cheater glasses over my cheater glasses to read that thing. Well, let’s see how the system works, on face value things seem smoother..

    Eileen Applegate YHEC 2009

Eileen Applegate took 3rd place overall (that includes the boys) in the State YHEC competition at Penn State  the last weekend in June, by the time you read this she and the other competitors will be in New Mexico at the National competition. Best wishes to all the participants.

As a note most of these young outdoors people in our area are from Branch Valley Fish and Game, if you have youngsters interested in competing in YHEC, let me know and I will put you in touch with the appropriate people.

We hope to have the Gun Raffle tickets in the mail by the end of July. The drawing will take place in November. This should give us plenty of time to sell the tickets.

With the cooler temperatures we have had, the trout fishing in the Lehigh Valley is still good. Nockamixon Lake has been producing some good catches of panfish.

Offshore, the stripers, bluefish and wreck fishing has been good, keeper flounder are few and far between. The tuna and billfish should be picking up in the canyons very soon.

  • Ranges
    Phil Fachet

Both ranges are in good condition.

Bill Baldwin approached the Directors with a proposal to bring sample targets to the General Membership Meeting to get some interest in making changes to the range rules to allow use of alternate targets, not just bullseye or spot targets, on the cardboard. The targets Bill brought were small pivoting-metal discs that move when hit. Another was a frying pan attached to a wood frame with a hook to allow the pan to move when hit. The targets received a warm welcome and Bill was asked to bring a proposal to the Director’s Meeting to start the discussion on this change.
