Presidents Column - June 2009

George D. Honeywell

Let’s talk safety this month. I have noticed our General Meetings mostly consist of “older” members. As time goes by, the muscles and reflexes diminish, and slow to the point that we need to be extra aware when we go to the field and stream. Those slippery rocks in the woods, fields and streams are merciless and the logs we have to step over just get higher and awfully grabby. Old bones mend slow, so let’s be careful out there. I have spent a lot of time in the remote Colorado wilderness, most often alone, and I am seriously considering one of the new emergency locating devices for my next adventure. The thought for this month came to me after my 5-year old grandson fell 19” (I measured it) off a backyard water slide and fractured his elbow. It just goes to show, it doesn’t take much.
