Presidents Column -- June/July 2011

The President’s Column

You may have noticed purple triangles hanging is trees along the highways, they are traps designed to catch the “Emerald Ash Borer” which comes to us from China via Michigan where it was identified in 2002 and believed to have arrived via packing materials. The traps have a scent bag to attract the insect which becomes stuck to a sticky substance applied to the exterior of the structure. The adult insect mates and lays its eggs in the crevices of the bark. After the eggs hatch the larvae bore into the tree and consume as they go eventually killing the tree in 1 to 3 years. All varieties of ash are susceptible and there is no natural enemy to the EAB in the U.S.

Thanks to John Finnegan for the lowdown on the purple triangles.

See Forestry for the skinny on Ash trees.

For the Good of the Association

There has been a long process ongoing to get the billboard along Doerr Rd. removed as per the agreement with Lands Trust. We have finally gotten to the solution. In 2009 the rent check was received by the Club, signed and deposited into the treasury. In doing this the lease was extended for (5) years which is the terms of the lease. Therefore the billboard will remain until the end of the lease in 2014. I am currently pursuing Lamar Advertising to reissue the lease check for this year.

Guests may come to the Club but must be accompanied by a Member. There are forms in the clubhouse door which need to be filled out and deposited with the $10.00 fee in the slot box in the door. Both the member and guest must sign in at the range boxes. No guests are allowed in November and December.

Building Committee

All of the drywall is now hung and we are scheduling the finisher to get the spackling done. The kitchen cabinetry is ready for pick up so we are going to concentrate on the kitchen area for finishes as soon as possible.

Please call for the work schedule if you can help out for a day.

Game

Hunting licenses are out for issue.

Whitetail deer is the most pursued large game animal in the country, let’s take a look at them.

The scientific name is “Odocoileus Virginianus” and is the smallest of the North American deer species. They are found from southern Canada down into Central and South America. There are several subspecies that are smaller then the deer native to our area such as the Key Deer (very small) found in southern Florida and the Coues (pronounced Cows) that inhabit the desert Southwest.

Whitetails typically give birth to 1 – 3 fawns in May and June after a 7 month gestation period. The mortality rate for fawns varies with predation from bears, coyotes and other predators and of course vehicles.

Whitetails are herbivores that eat a variety of plants naturally growing and planted crops, they are ruminants with a four chambered stomach like cows.

Forestry

There is more timber down and available for firewood, please contact the Club or President George Honeywell and we will get you in touch with the Forestry Chairman.

Club Timber Spotlight: Ash

We primarily have “Red Ash” (Fraxinus Pennsylvanica) through out the property some of which have fallen prey to the Emerald Ash Borer. This is a medium sized tree with smooth gray bark as a sapling growing up to 75’ with heavy fissured bark. When harvested and milled the wood is a beautiful blond with wavy reddish grain.

Archery

There were 14 Shooters at the May shoot and 38 at the June shoot.

See the events schedule for the next shoot.

Shoots

There were 8 dead board and 1 flying board shoots and several baked good raffles at the Spring Shoot netting approximately $500.00.

This is way down from shoots in the past, we just need more participation.
