Presidents Column - September 2009

George D. Honeywell

I missed the July Director’s meeting due the viewing for a friend’s 3-year old who drowned in the family pool. Seeing the family’s agony that night, and still today, I am reminded we are the Guardians. We are the Guardians of ourselves, our families, our possessions, our communities and our Country. It is up to all of us to make our voices heard on any subject, pro or con, that affects those things we are Guardians of.

As our Club pledge states “I give my pledge as an American to faithfully defend from waste the natural resources of my Country, its soils, minerals, forests, waters and wildlife”.  And personally, I would add the Constitution to that statement.

    Eileen Applegate YHEC 2009

Eileen Applegate placed 33rd overall out of 185 National competitors at the YHEC National competition in New Mexico. Her team placed 6th out of 31 teams with two other PA teams placing 8th and 19th. Other PA standouts include Vince DiSante from Branch Valley Fish & Game who placed 18th in the individual competition, and a young man from western PA who placed 2nd in the individual events.

We mention this because we donate sponsorship money each year to support YHEC.

The competition includes archery, small and large bore rifle, muzzleloader and shotgun events.

As a note, most of these young outdoors people in our area are from Branch Valley Fish and Game, if you have youngsters interested in competing in YHEC let me know and I will put you in touch with the appropriate people.

State Representative Paul Clymer made his annual visit to the Club at the August General Membership Meeting. As always, Paul informed us of some of the hot items in Harrisburg and Washington. Besides all of the National headline issues one very important bill (HR45) is still in orbit in the U.S. Congress. If passed this bill would make it virtually impossible to own a gun as a law abiding citizen. Google it and read it for yourself.

We will have the Gun Raffle tickets in the mail by the end of August the drawing will take place in November this should give us plenty of time to sell the tickets.

I have the electrical drawings done and the plumbing drawings will be completed by the next Building Committee meeting on September 1st.

I asked Paul Clymer if there is grant money available for the Club from the State or Federal Government for “Green” projects associated with the Clubhouse construction. He stated there is and he will forward the paperwork/application to us.

Many deer are being seen with quite a few triplet fawns and buck being seen. Just this morning (8/12) on the way to work I saw two nicely racked bucks in full velvet sparring in a field in Chester County.

There were 58 shooters at the July 3D shoot. The 3D course is in good shape, we placed four new targets on the course before the last shoot. As a reminder, the 3D targets are for the shoots. There is a 15-target bale course and target butts for Members to practice on.

The Fall Turkey Shoot is tentatively set for November 8th. Bob Meas will check with Mumbaurersville and the local Fire Companies to check for conflicts.

  • Ranges
    Phil Fachet

Both ranges are in good condition.

Bill Baldwin approached the Directors with a proposal to bring sample targets to the General Membership Meeting to get some interest in making changes to the range rules to allow use of alternate targets, not just bullseye or spot targets on cardboard. The targets Bill brought were small pivoting metal discs that move when hit. Another was a frying pan attached to a wood frame with a hook to allow the pan to move when hit. The targets received a warm welcome and Bill was asked to bring a proposal to the Director’s Meeting to start the discussion on this change.

This issue will again be discussed at the next Director’s meeting.
